NATURAL BEAUTY SPOTS

Boqueixón municipal district features several natural beauty spots and recreational areas where you can spend a relaxing day with family, friends, or on your own. There are several options for nature lovers to enjoy beautiful riverside spots (especially on the banks of the Ulla River), restored waterwheels, or a Romanesque bridge that played a part in a unique historical episode. Keep reading to discover all these spots that you can find in Boqueixón.

Ínsuas de Gres Recreational Area

In the parish of Ledesma, the Ulla River forms a natural boundary between the provinces of A Coruña (Boqueixón) and Pontevedra (Vila de Cruces). This is also an outstanding natural beauty spot featuring seven small islets that are linked by bridges. They are ideal for enjoying a day out, since they also feature a lovely river beach, and several benches and tables for eating.

Here you can contemplate the Romanesque bridge spanning the Ulla River that separates both municipal districts. The bridge was a witness to an important historical episode. Ponteledesma was where a Napoleonic battle took place in March 1809, with the local inhabitants coming off victorious. It is well worth spending an afternoon on the banks of the Ulla River, enjoying the sound of the leaves rustling in the breeze.

A Capela de San Paio beauty spot

Located in the parish of Codeso, it is one of the Boqueixón municipal district’s most complete and beautiful spots. The ideal place for spending a day surrounded by nature since, beside the Chapel of San Paio, you will find a small trail (less than a kilometre long) running alongside the river that will take you on a singular trip featuring Galician riverside woodland, two waterfalls, several restored waterwheels, and even a miracle-working fountain. A truly memorable experience!

This same area is a stopping point on one of Boquexión municipal district’s trekking routes. From here you can also undertake a 10-kilometre itinerary that ends in the parish of Ledesma.

Gastrar Recreational Area

This is a pleasant leisure spot located in the parish of the same name. It features several benches, barbeques (only available for use at certain times of the year), and a small children’s playground on the banks of a small stream and under a large oak grove.

The surroundings feature the remains of Castro de Gastrar, a fortified settlement from the Iron Age. It is also recommendable to visit the Waterwheels Interpretation Centre, which you will find a restored waterwheel in this recreational area that is still working. A different way of learning about this area’s corn-grinding tradition.

Sucira recreational area

Located in the south of Boqueixón municipal district, this area is bathed by the Ulla River on its right bank. You will be surprised by its extensive oak grove of great beauty and natural interest.

It is therefore the ideal place for spending a day in contact with nature. This area also features several benches, tables, and barbecues for enjoying a day beside the river.

Sucira Recreational Area

Located in the south of Boqueixón municipal district, this area is bathed by the Ulla River on its right bank. You will be surprised by its extensive oak grove of great beauty and natural interest.

It is therefore the ideal place for spending a day in contact with nature. This area also features several benches, tables, and barbecues for enjoying a day beside the river.

Waterfalls

In addition to its extensive green areas, Lestedo also features another interesting nature site. Cascada de Ramil is one of three waterfalls on the Pontillón River, in the section that goes through Boqueixón municipal district, before flowing into the Ulla River. Located near the village of Ramil, the water here falls from a height of 8 metres among granitic rocks, surrounding by vegetation that makes up a leafy riverside forest.

Another waterfall worth visiting is the one in the parish of Vigo. It is a small waterfall of unique beauty surrounded by leafy woodland.

Viewpoints

Apart from the impressive Pico Sacro viewpoint, Boqueixón also has another two points of interest worth visiting. The first is located in Doñas, where you can enjoy a viewpoint overlooking the Ponte de Gundián bridge. It what is known as Galicia’s smallest parish, you will also discover a spring characterised by its medicinal waters.

Another of Boqueixón’s viewpoints is located in the parish of Loureda. There you can enjoy the characteristic scenery of inland Galicia from Mirador del Monte Castelo.
