PICO SACRO

PICO SACRO

Pico Sacro is Boquexón municipal district’s icon para excellence. The writer Ramón Otero Pedrayo described it as “Galicia’s most beautiful and symbolic summit” and Castelao as the “altar of Galicia.”

This sacred hill is part of an enclave in which nature merges with history, legends, and traditional stories. Its pointed shape, its peculiar morphology featuring crystalised quartz rocks, and its height of almost 600 metres form an unmistakable silhouette, while offering one of the most extensive panoramic views in all Galicia.

Pico Sacred’s link with St James is very clear, as mentioned in the Codex Calixtinus. In fact, this enclave plays an essential role in the “Traslatio” journey to bring the Apostle James’ body to Santiago de Compostela, specifically with regard to the myth about Queen Lupa.

Pico Sacro also hides the remains of a medieval fort that protected the approach to Compostela from the “Vía de la Plata” route, as well as the architectural treasures of the Chapel of San Sebastián, which was originally part of an old monastery from the year 912. More information is available for visitors in the Interpretation Centre housed in the former rectory of Lestedo, in the village of Cachosenande at the foot of Pico Sacro. There you can obtain all the information required to understand the genesis and historical evolution of this natural monument.
