WHAT IS IT?
The Filloa de Lestedo Festival is a food and cultural event whose main day is the Sunday after Shrove Tuesday, being held in the locality of Lestedo, Boqueixón-A Coruña. The event, which was declared a Galician Festival of Tourist Interest in 2008, is an exquisite way of rounding off the Carnival season.
The Filloa de Lestedo Cultural Association, in collaboration with Boqueixón Town Council, organises this event with the participation of more than 200 parishioners. The Filloa de Lestedo Festival is attracting more and more visitors every year. With a view to furthering its promotion, the 40th festival increased its programme of activities to two weeks. Musical performances, cooking shows, tastings, the traditional Carnival of the Generals of the Ulla, children’s activities and filloeira machines, which can make up to 1,200 filloas per hour, were the main features of the 2023 programme.
Lestedo’s Campo de la Fiesta (fairground) is thereby filled with thousands of visitors, who come to savour different types of filloas featuring a great variety of fillings. In 2023, a new feature was introduced, with the sale of gluten-free filloas made especially with celiacs in mind.
Aprons of Honour
With its declaration as a Festival of Galician Festival of Tourist Interest, the Filloa de Lestedo Festival started awarding Aprons of Honour. These are awarded to individuals involved in organising this event, as well as to outstanding figures of Galicia’s and Spain’s political, social, and cultural life. They are tasked with acting as ambassadors for this food event wherever they go.
Since 2008, close to 100 distinguished individuals have been awarded the Lestedo Filloa de Lestedo Festival’s Apron of Honour. The 40th festival featured the 2 Michelin-star chef Manuel Costiña (from the Culler de Pau restaurant), who also delivered the opening speech. In addition, the Apron of Honour was also awarded to Adolfo Gacio Vázquez, former mayor of Boqueixón, and Nuria Colmenero, head of Food Safety of the Association of Celiacs of Galicia (ACEGA).
